St. Lawrence Carnival Nordic Day 2

Writer's picture: Elizabeth GrazianiElizabeth Graziani

Day 2 of the St. Lawrence Carnival was combined with Eastern Cup #2. 612 starters toed the line today for a 7.5k classic individual start race (5k for the U16s). There were a lot of skiers out on course with the short 15 second interval between starters. Racers completed two laps of a 3.75k course that included almost as much climbing as the 5k course yesterday. In typical Lake Placid fashion, the climbs were steep and the downhills were fast, leaving skiers with little time to rest. The day started out warmer than yesterday and the sun came out about half way through the girls race, which changed the waxing plans.

The race started at 10:00am with Colby skier Maddie Hooker out first on course. After a 5th place finish yesterday, Dartmouth skier Jasmine Drolet won the race today by 30 seconds.

After a great showing at the Bates Carnival (8th in the sprint and 2nd in the 10k) UNH first-year Clara Hegan placed 2nd today. When asked about her race, Hegan commented, “today was definitely a tough race, the course was super challenging. But the waxing was great and I was able to have good kick on all the climbs. My strategy was to leave it all out there and that’s what I did!” Dartmouth skier Ava Thurston came in 3rd place two seconds after Hegan with a time of 22:24.3. After placing 20th in yesterday’s mass start, Greta Kilburn skied another great race today and placed 15th. After her race, the UVM first-year commented, “today was definitely a pretty unique day because of the waxing. I think it was pretty tricky and getting it right was critical.”

Men

Dartmouth skier Luke Allan skied another fantastic race today and got the win again. He had the 2nd fastest first lap and his second lap was the 3rd fastest. The only guy to beat him on the first lap was UVM skier Finn Sweet, who placed 2nd today. When asked about his race tactics, Sweet commented, “I had a pretty hot first lap, maybe could’ve toned it down a little bit and paced it out a little better. But I think it was a good effort, getting better every weekend so I can’t complain about that.” Finn’s teammate, Petter Bakken, placed third and had a different strategy saying, “I kinda had the opposite, I went out a little slower and skied into it – it felt like I was going faster and faster. It was fun to have both of us on the podium today. It was a solid day for the team overall” Middlebury skier Jack Christner is back from sickness and had a great weekend. He placed 7th today and said, “it was tough out there. There are a lot of big hills, a lot of vert. And the downhills are fast, you’ve gotta keep your head on you, and not just sit there and rest the whole time.” Shoutout to GMVS skier Finn Christiansen who placed 12th overall and was the top club skier today. It’s always exciting for the high school skiers to race the college kids and see how they stack up.
