Dartmouth Wins; University of Vermont Fights Back but Still Takes Second

Stowe, VT:  While the University of Vermont had an individual win in the women's 10k Classic as well as an individual and team victory in the men's 15k Classic, their successes were not enough to overcome the Dartmouth team's depth on the last day of their home carnival. The final total scores were Dartmouth winning with 919 points, the University of Vermont coming in second with 798 points, and the University of New Hampshire taking third place with 735 points.

The final day of the University of Vermont carnival started with snow, sleet, and even a rumble of thunder. While the weather did clear up, providing a blustery but bluebird clear day, the unrest on the course was set to stay throughout the day with conditions which proved near impossible to wax correctly for, leading many of the top skiers to choose waxless skis.

Despite the adverse conditions two Catamounts came out on top skiing their home course at the Trapp Family Lodge. Freshman phenomenon Caitlin Patterson took first place in collegiate competition with a time of 36:53.9 for the second day in a row and was only bested by Saab Solomon skier Kristina Strandberg who claimed victory in the Skate event held on Saturday. On the men's side classic powerhouse Juergen Uhl took the men's collegiate honors with a time of 45:13.6 and third place in the NENSA rankings.

Sunday indeed was a freshman day on the women's side, with Colby's Lucy Garrec taking second place in collegiate competition by two and one tenth seconds. Rounding out the women's top three was Dartmouth's Ida Sargent about fifty seconds back from the first two. For the men Dartmouth skier Ben True took second place with a time of 45:58.6 and Williams skier Dimitri Luthi finished with a 46:15.3 for third.

Watch the slopes next weekend at the Dartmouth Carnival as the Big Green takes the fight to their home while others will be gunning to stop their streak.
