Dartmouth Fights Back and Wins University of New Hampshire Carnival
Jackson, NH: Dartmouth has yet again proved its mettle, overcoming a first day loss at the University of New Hampshire carnival against the home University of New Hampshire team to blast through their points deficit and win by sixty three points.
The University of New Hampshire's loss was not for lack of trying. The Alpine team placed first in the Men's Slalom and second in the Women's Slalom. Nordic results were more disappointing, yielding a fourth place for the Women and an eighth place for the Men.
Despite the Men's Slalom run yielding a disappointing eighth place, the Big Green was able to use resounding strength in other disciplines to power over their one slip. Powering it certainly was, Dartmouth won the other three events of the day. Yet again Courtney Hammond led the Dartmouth Women to victory on her win while the best placing in the Men's Slalom was eleventh. The Nordic teams won both events by a comfortable margin, placing four Men as well as four Women in the top ten spots in their races including a Women's 10k Skate win by Rose Brennan.
The University of Vermont was able to recover their footing with solid results in all four fields, three seconds and one third place to take third place overall. David Donaldson resumed his winning ways by winning the Slalom despite a challenge by Williams' Alex Dyroff who was only one hundredth out after the first run of Slalom. Indeed, Williams could have used the extra twenty points from a win as Middlebury edged Williams by only nine points for the fourth place finish.
The University of Vermont slipped slightly this weekend. Yet Dartmouth revealed some weak spots, dramatically demonstrated by the Men's Slalom. The University of New Hampshire proved determined not to be left outside the party as well, showing it has the ammunition to play for keeps alongside the other two titans. So who will slip and who will hold steady? Join us next weekend for the University of Vermont carnival, held at the Trapp Family lodge and Stowe, to find out.
