University of New Hampshire Takes First Day of Home Carnival by Storm

Jackson, NH: Those in need of proof of home court advantage need look no further than the first day of the University of New Hampshire's carnival with Nordic events at Jackson Touring Center and Alpine events at Attitash. In a stark contrast to last weekend, the University of New Hampshire won the first day of the carnival with the Dartmouth team close behind and Williams bringing up third.
The University of New Hampshire decimated the alpine field, placing athletes in five out of the six podium positions with only a win in the Women's Giant Slalom by Dartmouth's Courtney Hammond keeping the Wildcats from a complete sweep. The overall winner for the men was William Ford, followed up by Wildcat's Sean McNamara, and Michael Cremeno. Their mastery of the race was almost matched by Aileen Farrell and Cynthia Tessier who garnered second and third place in the Women's Giant Slalom.
The University of New Hampshire's Nordic squad held up their end of the bargain as well, placing second in the Women's Classic Sprints and third in the Men's event. Yet again though Dartmouth showed that it was not willing to let go easily, posting commanding leads of 20 and 26 points in the men's and women's Classic Sprints. The women's side placed Big Green athletes in both first and second while the men managed a first place finish as well as fourth and fifth.
Further down the pack there was plenty to be seen as well. Williams' third place team finish put the school right in contention with strong performances by both the Alpine and Nordic Squads. The Nordic Sprints were also the site of some rather intense physical contact, both a highly ranked Bates and Middlebury student were taken out on a final corner after rounding in a large pack of skiers in a semi final heat.
So join us tomorrow for more action from the Jackson and Attitash as the competition heats up for the top three spots at the University of New Hampshire Carnival.
