Dartmouth takes first day of St. Lawrence Carnival

Lake Placid, NY: The first day of the St. Lawrence carnival has shown that Darmouth has not been sitting idle in the off-season. UVM had three in the top five on the Giant Slalom hill at Whiteface Mountain for men and woman but the Dartmouth women showed everyone who was in town with a sweep of the top five in the Women's 5k Classic event held at Mt. Van Hoevenberg. Combined with consistency in other events, Dartmouth wound up with a 50 point lead by the end of day one.
The grey and damp conditions that descended on the first day of the St. Lawrence were a far cry from the sun of the day before. Many racers probably would have preferred the latter. Waxing proved a fine art to master for the classic race, resulting in a few choice words on the uphill sections. The Giant Slalom proved no different, with the rough surface conditions resulting in a number of pre releases.
For the Women's Classic 5k, the win went to Ida Sargent (15m10s), followed up by teammates Rosie Brennan (15m26s), and Katie Bono (14m49). Dartmouth also took the men's 10k Classic first honors with Nils Koons (27m32s) while University of Vermont's Franz Bernstein (28m06s) followed in second and University of New Hampshire's Dylan McGuffin (28m07s) took third place.
The Giant Slalom race victories both went to the University of Vermont, with Catamounts David Donaldson (1:59.75) and Lyndee Janowiak (2:03.79) claming top honors for the Men and Women. Coming in after Donaldson for the men was University of Vermont team mate Robby Kelley (2:00.76) with Middlebury's Bryan Shpall (2:00.76) taking third. On the women's side, Dartmouth's Courtney Hammond (2:05.00) took second place followed by University of Vermont's Megan Ryley (2:05.08).
Team point totals stood at 475 for Dartmouth, 425 for the University of Vermont , and 392 for the University of New Hampshire. Tomorrow's forecast calls for much of the same overcast skies with warm temperatures so come back tomorrow to see who can tame the Alpine Slalom and Nordic Freestyle races.
