            Dartmouth wins… but barely

Stowe, VT: Dartmouth squeaked by with a mere eight points past the University of Vermont on the third day of the University of Vermont carnival to take the win.

The weather and scene was much like yesterday with multitudes of cheering crowds and temperatures that inspired more than a little shivering. Regardless, the course at the Trapp Family Lodge was in great shape and skiers whizzed around the circuit with great gusto despite the sometimes formidable winds.

On the men's side Middlebury's Patrick Johnson (26m46s) laid down a conservative first lap but a blazing second lap to take his first ever EISA win. Yesterday's victor from the University of Vermont, Franz Bernstein (26m56s) wasn't far behind to claim the second spot while the University of New Hampshrie's Dylan McGuffin (27m07s) took the third spot with an even smaller margin.

For the women the University of Vermont's Caitlin Patterson (30m49s) fired it up for the home course and skied to first place while the Dartmouth Duo of Rosie Brennan (31m04s) and Ida Sargent (31m13s) wasn't far behind to claim second and third place.

Overall team scores were as close as they've been for a long time. The winner was Dartmouth with 890 points while runner up University of Vermont had 882 points- a scant eight point difference. Third place went to the University of New Hampshire with 745 points and Middlebury and Williams took fourth and fifth with 683 and 617 points respectively. With that slim of a margin between the top two there are certainly quite a few "what if" questions floating around. We'll see if the University of Vermont takes on renewed energy from this brush with victory to clinch the victory next weekend. However, with Dartmouth defending their home glory will certainly be gunning at the top of its form next weekend.

So join us next weekend for the Dartmouth carnival. While the Alpine events will be held at the Dartmouth Skiway the Nordic events will likely come back to the Trapp Family Lodge due to lack of snow at Dartmouth's home course.
