Dartmouth Has Lead on First Day of Home Carnival
Hanover, NH: The opening salvo of the Dartmouth Carnival was not the absolute broadside one has come to expect but solid results more than did the trick, placing the Big Green in first with 466 points followed by an outstanding performance by Middlebury skiers in all disciplines, producing 411 points. The University of Vermont finished up third with a total of 377 points.
The Nordic race, held at the Dartmouth Cross Country Center in Oak Hill, was not only the first time Dartmouth freshman Sophie Caldwell has raced in a carnival since coming home from racing abroad but also her first carnival race ever on the Dartmouth team. She didn't disappoint, taking first place in the 5k classic race with a time of 15:10.7 followed up by teammate Ida Sargent who clocked 15:24.00. Middlebury's Elise Moody-Roberts, another freshman, rounded out the top three with 15:27.5.
The highlight for Middlebury though was Simeon Hamilton's performance for the Panthers in the men's classic 10k. He took the win with a time of 26:19.7, unseating the classic meister Juergen Uhl who took second with a time of 26:33.7 for the University of Vermont. Uhl was followed by another Catamount, Franz Bernstein, who placed third with a time of 26:33.7.
On the Alpine side of things Dartmouth's Courtney Hammond has yet to lose a Giant Slalom race. Today on her home hill the result proved no different with Hammond taking her fourth straight Giant Slalom win with a total time of 1:51.44. Her win certainly was not for lack of competition. St. Lawrence skier Lindsay Cone was pushing hard both runs with a total time of 1:51.70 to place second. Hammond's Dartmouth teammate Kelsey Roddick won the first run but slipped to third place with a total time of 1:51.83.
For the Men, William Ford took top honors for the University of New Hampshire with a total time of 1:47.98 followed by Dartmouth skier Luke McLaughry with a time of 1.48.04. Taking third place was Williams skier Eric Mann with a time of 1:48.61.
Join us tomorrow to see if the new member of the top three club Middlebury can let it all hang out and challenge the perennial powerhouse Dartmouth on their home turf.
